Introduction to the Developing Self and Others Service Behaviour

Developing Self and Others means taking responsibility for your own learning while supporting the growth of colleagues.

The Formal Civil Service Definition of Developing Self and Others is:

Focus on continuous learning and development for self, others and the organisation as a whole.

It involves seeking feedback, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities for improvement. By reflecting on your performance and encouraging others to do the same, you help build a skilled, confident, and high-performing team.

Most individuals who are successful in their careers share the characteristic of self-development. In fact, continuous professional development is a key activity in all our careers.

What Does Developing Self and Others Mean?

Developing Self and Others means identifying areas where your skills or knowledge could improve and taking steps to address them. It’s about owning your personal development, using feedback from colleagues or appraisals to grow, and actively sharing what you’ve learned to support the growth of your team.

It is sometimes referred to as Empowering Others and for senior posts, in addition to the above, it is about helping your team to develop their skills to seek learning opportunities and to support the development plans of all colleagues.

Put into simple terms, Developing Self and Others means:

  • Looking for gaps in your skills and knowledge and making plans to overcome these gaps.
  • Taking responsibility for your own development, acting on feedback from colleagues or appraisals and indeed sharing your learning with others in your team.
  • For senior posts, in addition to the above, it is about helping your teams to develop their skills to seek learning opportunities and to support the development plans of all colleagues.

Both in the workplace and outside, continually looking for ways to develop and improve yourself is an excellent skill to possess and demonstrate.

Situation

Start by briefly outlining the scenario, what was involved, what was the problem that needed to be solved or what was the development initiative that you took. For example:

“I recently completed a training course in making presentations and using both PowerPoint Visme and just last week I gave a successful presentation to my team using these new skills and received excellent feedback.”

Task

A brief summary as to why this was required, describe how you have worked on developing your own skills or knowledge. Focus on how you initiated the task, for example:

“Soon after joining, I realised that my presentation skills were lacking and I would need these in order to do my role efficiently.”

Action

This is the part that will score most marks. In the actions you must show three things:

  1. Correct positive behaviours matching the Civil Service framework
  2. The relevant Civil Service strengths
  3. Clear capability with this behaviour Working Together

Without those your answer will not score well. Start with a strong action showing an ability to work with others for example:

“I spoke to my teammates and asked how often they made presentations and what types of tools and training they had.”

Follow with key actions that clearly demonstrate your ability to Develop Yourself and Others successfully.

Result

A clear and successful outcome is required for example, here is a sample section:

“It was a great learning experience for me, despite being nervous, I enjoyed standing up and presenting. I received great feedback from my manager in terms of the quality of the content and how clearly I communicated.”
